This week on my Tuesday Talk in my Facebook Group Sustainable Self Care for Passionate and Professional Women I discussed why asking how to know your best work culture fit! Read more to learn how to know YOUR best work culture fit.
HAVE YOU EVER…. Felt like you were unworthy, weird, or an outcast at work? Have you ever seen how your coworkers relate to each other, what they laugh at, what they like to do and feel completely different? What about communication styles? Have your coworkers or boss ever been so different than you that you have a hard time advocating for yourself at work?
I USED TO STRUGGLE WITH feeling like I was an outcast. I had different values than my coworkers, I wanted different things out of my future, I believed in different priorities for myself, my clients, and my future. I felt really alone.
AND THEN I FIGURED OUT how important identifying my best work culture fit was! I learned what I wanted, how to identify it, and how to not settle for anything less. I truly started to value and honor my needs. Read on to learn more about what you need to know about yourself in order to truly find your best work culture fit.
You need to start by getting to know yourself and your needs – your personal values, how you make decisions, identities, strengths, personality traits, and ask yourself does the organization you’re applying to value those same things? Do you know how to screen for that?
Learn from what you’ve liked and not liked before in past experiences – what environments have you felt most comfortable in? Think about all the options or experiences you’ve had that you thrived in: office setting, classrooms, outside in nature, gyms, factories, art studios? Whatever you can DREAM of getting paid for – chances are there is SOMEONE out there getting paid to do that work right now – including leading a yoga retreat on a beach (like this post’s photo)!
Know what a supportive environment would feel like to you, know what success looks like to you, how much interaction do you want with peers, supervisors, etc… Are you interested in collaborative group work or are you happier as an independent worker? Do you prefer to work with people or things?
Know how you want to relate to your coworkers and how to develop healthy relationships with clear boundaries. How important is having intentional team building to you? Do you want to go on work retreats together? Do you want your leadership to value teamwork?
Know what supervision style works well for you and how to ask for the feedback you want or the support you need to do your best work. Do you want to have a review every year? What do you want to be reviewed on? What type of feedback do you want to receive? How often do you want to have 1:1 conversation with your supervisor?
Know your leadership and group engagement style and how to advance your career when you’re ready for it, and how to set boundaries on work responsibilities. Do you want to be ‘on-call’ or do you want the company to adhere to strict business hours? Do you want to be expected to check email on vacation days? Do you want a strict 9-5 job or are weekend projects okay with you?
You can screen possible employers for fit for you, pre-interview if possible. You should know how to screen for ALL of this before you accept a job so you don’t continue getting into job opportunity after job opportunity just to be disappointed by the REALNESS of what that company is like.
- Can you honestly show up as your true self in interviews?
- Do you know what you want out of your ideal career and lifestyle?
- Do you have answers to all of these questions in this blog post?
- Do you know how to screen potential employers for your best culture fit?
- Are you getting tired of winding up in a job after job just to be disappointed?
“Before working with Jenesis… my biggest struggle was determining how to pinpoint what career I would thrive the most in and my biggest frustrations at my job were the constant feeling of boredom and going nowhere. I struggled with having confidence in myself at work and in my personal life and I felt defeated and rather aimless.
Sustain Your Passion has helped me gain clarity and some direction in the career I should pursue, helped increase my confidence, and clarify some answers to questions I have been pondering for the last few years.
I have more confidence and purpose at work, I feel like I can successfully complete job responsibilities and to express myself when necessary in my professional and personal life.”
