Career confidence is one’s confidence that they are “on the right track” with their career, that their career aligns well with who they are and what they want out of life. Career confidence is not a rating of how confident someone feels they can complete the job they are assigned.
Career confidence is truly about how well you fit with your current job and career.
Achieving career confidence comes from deliberately seeking answers to the following questions:
- Who am I?
- How do I know what career I want, that would be a good fit for me?
- How do I actually go and get that job?
- How do I know this job aligns well with my ultimate dream lifestyle?
Prioritizing our self-love can also hugely impact our career confidence. Many women are taught to deny their needs, thoughts, and “go with the flow” or to be “selfless” for the benefit of the group. This can end up looking like women not sharing their opinions, not being viewed as leaders, and not getting recognized for their valuable work. All of these opportunities to engage with our work (or not engage with our work) can influence our career confidence. To intentionally learn self-love is to intentionally improve our careers. How do we find other careers that might help us achieve greater career confidence?
I believe it starts with the decision to want more career confidence, to be in a better fitting career, and to achieve a happier more fulfilling lifestyle. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. By asking yourself, honestly, if you could be in a better fitting career you open the opportunity for you to start getting help exploring who you are, what you want from your career, and how to find a job that actually allows you to be yourself and feel that you are on the right track to reaching your lifestyle dreams.
